Texas/Oklahoma area Gathering this summer at Broken Bow July 25th weekend

I'm still around, just a busy year.

@DCB-270, you were part of the small group of us at the original YJB annual gathering on Texoma and I hate to not see you at the JB.net inaugural gathering. :(

I was at Texoma last weekend and I was quite pleasantly surprised to find the water was back up and the islands were packed. Haven't seen it like that in a few years. May go back sometime in August. Do you have any boat trips planned?

Wish me and the family could make it, but we will be draging the 5th wheel to Pensicola FL vor a 2 week vacation. No boat. I would be exsreamly over lenth.

@MIDLIFECRISIS I would be interested in any feedback/ comments of must see and do's upon your return. The wife and I, along with another couple will be taking our fifths to Navarre Fl. In mid September which is not that far from where you will be at.

We were there last weekend too. Stayed at Buncombe. Not really sure when we are going to be able to get away again. The water is great.

Here are my thoughts on our off the water and eating together gatherings.

Friday night let's plan to meet at the Grateful Head for pizza and beer. I'm thinking it wouldn't be as busy as Saturday night might be. Then for Saturday night let's bring our own meat to grill and a side dish to share with the group. I'm pretty sure that there's charcoal grills at most, if not all, of the cabins. I'm bringing my little gas grill that can cook about 8 burger patties at once. We'll decide once we are all together who's cabin we want to gather at. I know that ours and Travis's cabin are in the same area and are close together in the state park. I know Mel's cabin is somewhere in the park as well. As far as I know everybody else is staying in cabins out of the park. Anybody know if @Bruce has found lodging yet or is still coming? We're really looking forward to seeing everyone and that beautiful lake again.

@PEARCE , do our cabins have grills? I like the idea, just not sure if we have a grill there. Also, probably charcoal, not gas, so will have to bring charcoal and lighter. I am going to do the guacamole and chips. Not sure about what meat or if we bring another side. Also, the cabin we have is a studio, so it is small. But wherever we gather is perfect, bring chairs! Not sure about tables, etc. I think there may be a fire pit but not sure on that either. Looking forward to it! But we only get Saturday, as we will arrive no sooner than 8pm on Friday unless miraculously Clara gets home early. And we have to break camp and head home Sunday morning, because I have to fly Sunday evening and will have to leave for the airport from home at 2:35pm. So while I love the getting together, if there were a place where we could all meet and not have the work and extra equipment, I would be for that as well, since whatever I bring/take home, will add to the process and how long it takes. Just be good to see everyone, even if short for us.

@PEARCE , I am having some transmission issues. 50/50 on whether or not we will make it.

It's a state park Mel so there's bound to be charcoal grills. Not real sure on the tables. We've all got folding chairs I believe and if not there are tailgates to sit on too. I could even stick in a couple extra chairs if needed. All of the cabins in the state park are small Mel. We'd be hanging out outside anyway.

@Bruce sorry to hear about your transmission troubles. That can be an expensive headache. Hope you get it resolved soon. I'm looking forward to hearing all about Bimini.

@Bruce , on the tow vehicle? Man, glad you made that big haul back and forth before they hit you! Now don't take this the wrong way, it is a question, but I wondered when you said you drove 85, if the gearing in that big truck was good for a long tow with a load at those speeds. I ask, because when we do Powell or Bimini, we will face the same issues, and my transmission isn't actually a transmission, it is a hybrid drive unit made by Allison, and it is expensive! I think it is plenty stout and we are under the weight limits a by 1000 pounds routinely, but heading out to one of those places, we are likely going to eat up all that extra margin. Sorry your having issues with it, take it in tomorrow and get it fixed...we will see you at BB!

@Pierce, @txav8r I have a 2007 Sierra Denali which was one of the first usages of the 6L80 transmission in trucks. The mechanicals appear to be sound but it throws check engine lights for solenoid issues.

I had the entire solenoid body which is part of the TCM replaced before the Bimini trip. That did not solve the problem so we changed the speed sensors the morning before I left for Bimini.

There is a TSB for a leaky seal on a clutch housing. GM upgraded the seal in 2010. I am hoping to hear from the shop on Monday as to whether or not they think it is worth trying the TSB. There have not been many issues with the 6L80 in my area so there is little experience with them.

If that does not work then the it will be swapped for a rebuilt or low mileage pull. I can't find a replacement locally so it could take 10 days for it to arrive.

I towed the boat twice this week. Once was up and down hills at Brady Mojntain. That trip triggered a CEL which put the transmission in limp more locking it in third gear. I cleared the code and everything was fine. It does not slip or otherwise have issues. It appears to be electrical gremlins but I have replace the electronics so it must be something else.

Oh man, I hate gremlins! Stay on them! Make the gathering!

I am good for a pizza night Friday night.

And I am good for the idea of bringing our own meat and a side for Saturday. If the group decides to go out for dinner on Saturday too, I would be fine with that too.

@maboat when you went to Broken Bow last, did you try to anchor in any of the coves? I've been successful only a few times till I found a cove with one of the house boat bouys. I've got a pic of one, but I can't get it off my phone. Most of the lake is very deep and as far as I know all rock. In our scouting out on Friday we may want to try and find a cove with one of them and we would just tie up together on one of the bouys. I actually prefer to float then to try and stand on a steep and rocky shore.

The more I hear about this lake, the more I am convinced that I need to talk everyone into coming to Lake Ouachita next year. With 400 islands to pick from we should be able to find the perfect spot. And we can anchor near the sandy beaches with bathrooms if we want.

Or go to Lake Hamilton for dinner, live music, clubs etc with docks.

Guys, that's what I've been trying to tell you about the coves I circled in the maps above. I don't like standing on rocks any more than the next guy. Those coves I highlighted are shallow and smooth bottom. Not sand, but not rocks or boulders. Its flat and firm like hard mud or shale. Very comfortable to stand and mingle. Go all the way to the end of my video and look at the shoreline. It gently sloping (not steep like others) and at that time was covered with grass.

@maboat I'm good with whatever will work best with the group. I can float and mingle just as easily as wading and standing.

@Bruce any of the lakes in your neck of the woods I'd be game for. We found two lakes on our summer vacation earlier this summer that I want to take the boat back to and spend some time on. One is in Tennessee just outside of Nashville called Percy Priest or something like that. The other is Degray Lake which is in your beautiful state. I'm always looking for an excuse to take the boat on a trip to a different lake. I'm still in shock that we're having it at Broken Bow this year. I never thought we'd leave Texoma.
