Who's staying out there for the storms or do they just appear that suddenly?

Fair question. I got blasted on our local social media for asking the question. I sat in my backyard, which is about 200 yards away from lakes edge, and watch the storm brew and roll in for about an hour and 30 minutes. There was plenty of time to get off the water. Now the one a couple of years ago was a freak storm.

I get it. The combined wake broke loose and knocked over a 5'x5' section of 8" thick concrete leaving a corner of the structure unsupported. It was old concrete but it was concrete!

The boats were illegally close to the boat house and other docks at the speed they were traveling.

That makes sense - and if they were illegally traveling close then, 100%, you have a reason to be pissed off.

Honestly, when I first saw it, it reminded me of my first time running up the Wolf River on a Saturday in my old 17' Rinker.

I had to call on my long-dormant ATV riding skill to keep the boat upright due to the multitude of massive boats that were passing me in both directions. If I would have stopped, I'd have been swamped.

I've been in my 21' when passing some big 40' cruisers going at speed on the narrow parts of the Wolf - yes that can get hairy really quick!

I've been "caught" in one lighting storm this year - and honestly, I was only caught because I thought I could outsmart the radar and was impatient about getting the boat on the river.

I participated in the Chicago Loop Cruise for 3 years - this is 50-100 boats that cruise down the Cal Sag canal, enter Lake Michigan, then go down the Chicago River.

The Cal Sag has very few no wake zones, and when the group takes off the canal becomes an utter mess! You really have to go "plowing speed" to keep the bow up until the boats spread out enough, and then it is a pretty unpleasant ride until it spreads out on the lake. I'd HATE to be on a river when any significant number of boats go by....it would be unpleasant at least, and dangerous at worst. You'd almost certainly need to get your boat moving to keep the bow up if you were, for example, in a 19' Yamaha, otherwise you'd risk a multiple waves over the bow.

So yes....large groups of boats cruising in the same direction will put small stationary boats on a narrow river in jeopardy. One or two....one can manage....you see it coming, you yell to your crew..."WAKE", you hold on and it passes. If you have to keep doing that over and over.....you are better off getting off the water (which would suck)

I went ahead and fixed the pic that got deleted so I can have my post put back up.

Am I the only one to think that this boat has been partially sunk for many months with that kind of algae, staining and tide marks on it, and that it was simply graffiti'd in the spirit of what ever parade was going on?

Almost certainly done as a joke....pretty funny too

Agree, I’m certain it’s a photoshop job. ?

I was taking a back seat because of where this headed for a bit. I have no desire to debate politics on this forum and support the policies around that. Awful hard to apply consistently in everyone’s eys when judgmental and I give the admins the benefit of the doubt. I truly appreciate all the attempts to keep politics out of here when I am bombarded by polarizing view points from all sides in nearly every other aspect of my personal life. My opinion is the thread title could be a bit better as the boat parade topic deserves discussion.

I posted a thread a bit back about a world record crushing boat parade with 3,417 boats. I did not hear about any damage occurring from it but that does not mean it did not happen either. The one boat that got swamped (it was also a participant based upon graphics I have seen) that I know of had no business being out there. A very small custom river style jet with almost no freeboard and exposed air filters on top of an uncovered 350 small block is not a good idea anywhere IMO. Never mind a giant lake or a giant lake on the day of a boat parade. No idea what really partially submerged it but it did make it to shore somehow.

Many boats did bow out before the end as it got very rough. This parade was on the main body of a very large and deep lake. It was well known and organized with DNR boats/skis, DNR plane, federal LEOS, a private helicopter, private planes, local LEOS, FM radio broadcast, drones, and Tow Boat US all providing support. Parade route/time posted on social and local media. Plan to allow for boats of different planning speeds to plane. Needless to say if you were on the lake this day you knew what was going on. I can only imagine what the ramps looked like. I don’t think anyone was there to cause harm or damage to anyone or anything nor did it likely cross most peoples minds that could happen. Even with all of this what happened when folks left the staging area was more of a free for all which may be why I did not hear of any damage. Boats were spread out further and stayed a good distance from shore. I can say no damage to the docks in the cove where I keep my boat from this event but storms have caused damage there.

I think this type of thing has become more popular with fewer things to do and the current environment we are in. Many participants I talked to before hand or since saw this as a safe and peaceful way to have a “voice” without getting involved in other shenanigans going on around the country. I think more people should know that something seemingly peaceful and innocent can cause harm/damage. Hopefully the knowledge of what a boat parade can do will at least inspire caution. As much as I support peaceful 1A and see these events regardless of side as fun I plan to own lake front property someday and would not want my property damaged by such an event.

@Bruce - Thanks for sharing and I hope rebuilding happens quickly for your parents.

I frankly dont care that much about party.....I care about person freedoms.....

Is there a risk in boating? Of course there is. We have a lake/river system nearby and it seems every year someone drowns.....from falling off a boat and somehow never resurfaces or someone drowns swimming....Should boating and swimming be banned there??

We should all be able to make a personal choice as to what we enjoy or not. My other interest besides boating is snowmobiling. There is not a snowmobiling season that does not include a few dozen deaths.....Yet I choose to continue as i enjoy the trips with my family. I also have an interest in motorcycles and grew up on them.....but my personal choice is that for motorcycles the risk outweighs my personal reward and so I do not own a motorcycle....yet I would NEVER want motorcycles to be banned......

And I dont think boat parades should be banned either.....stuff happens in life.....should no wake zones be observed? Of course.....and if there isn’t one then any outcomes of storms, etc and even damage caused from parades are just par for lake living. Shoreline and Sea walls rebuilt included.

@Scottintexas I am pretty sure that Claire will consider Bruce's house as one the safest places for property to be at. It will probably be on consignment, though LOL

More lazy reporting, it's all about the headline click bait

Saw this:

Boaters were set to travel around the lake, which is about 15 miles northwest of Austin, at 10 miles per hour, according to the event’s page.

So max wake speed. Brilliant!

I cringed when I saw that in the event description. Would have been safer for everyone to travel at 30MPH.

I feel like most of these incidents are drain plugs or poor maintenance. I passed 2000+ boats today going the opposite direction in a very narrow area for the Emerald Coast Parade world record attempt. No issues what so ever. There were boats of all sizes, little 10ft dingy to 100ft+ yachts and massive tour boats. Was at least 3 miles long of boats. Granted I got a 24ft but it wasn’t bad at all.

To much early AM booze, forgotten plugs, neglected maintenance, all recipes for going under.
